It’s no secret that the COVID-19 outbreak has affected individuals and businesses of all kinds, and law practices are no exception. Attorneys are having to evaluate if and when to close their office to the public, brainstorm how to best serve their clients, and how to take on new clients while maintaining social distancing requirements. It’s a new scenario for all of us, as even the courts are closing, but we want you to know that lawyers across the United States are continuing to serve you, their clients, in the midst of a difficult situation.
How?
Many attorneys are utilizing a variety of communication forms to stay connected with clients now that in-person meetings are currently discouraged. Phone and email communication (has and will be) an important aspect of staying in touch with your attorney. It will be of the essence now that most, if not all, of your documentation will need to be transferred via online methods, and the phone will be the quickest and easiest way for you to speak with your attorney. Video conferencing using platforms such as Face Time, Skype, Zoom, etc. are also being picked up by law practices to allow “face to face” interaction with their current clients and new clients without putting anyone at risk.
Most attorneys are also making a concentrated effort to serve as support for distraught clients during a very uncertain time, aside from their legal troubles. By making sure their cases continue forward (even in unconventional ways and/or with a slightly varied timeline) clients feel like at least one aspect of their lives has normalcy. As lawyers, we do our best to hold the hand of clients through various difficult circumstances including divorce, injury, death of a loved one, and so forth, and that hasn’t changed with the COVID-19 pandemic.
