Christmas is a special time of year, and no one can deny that there is a certain bit of “cheer” in the air during this season. Whether it’s the twinkling lights and upbeat carols, or anticipation of what’s to come on Christmas Day, something makes us happier, more positive, and kinder at this time of year. However, the holidays aren’t rosy for everyone in our community, and for families who are struggling to get by this holiday season, Christmas might not seem very merry.
Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we all sought to make Christmas better for those around us? Long after the cookies are eaten and the presents have been forgotten, charitable acts and the ways we give back impact our communities all year long. Our goal this year as we work with various organizations in and around the greater Tampa Bay area is to spread joy by giving back to individuals and families here in our own city, and make Christmas a happy time for everyone this year. Talbot House. Talbot House (https://talbothouse.org), an organization located in Lakeland, is combatting homelessness in the Polk County region by offering hope and help one individual at a time. They provide a variety of services to homeless men and women in the area, including food, shelter, medical and dental care, life improvement classes, and resources for finding employment. By giving the gift of hope for a better future, they are changing our community for the better.
OnBikes (Tampa). Riding a bike is a favorite pastime for many of us, but for lots of kids throughout the Tampa Bay area, something as simple as a bicycle isn’t part of their reality. OnBikes (https://www.onbikes.org), established in 2011, has made it their mission to ensure that every child has the opportunity to enjoy their own set of wheels, and they do this each year by hosting a variety of charitable events and fundraisers to provide brand new bikes and helmets to children who are considered at-risk, or those currently in foster care.
Support Our Scholars. We believe in the value of a quality college education and the impact it has on not just the life of the graduate, but in the lives of their family, those who their career will influence, and beyond. Unfortunately, college isn’t a possibility for many students in Central Florida due to financial circumstances or lack of support. Support Our Scholars (https://supportourscholars.org) provides financial and emotional support to disadvantaged young women who show amazing potential and desire to take their education to the next level. They are provided with a stipend and dorm essentials, financial and leadership guidance, business contacts and professional opportunities, and a trained mentor throughout her college career. By helping them meet their goals and achieve their dreams, we are thrilled to see these young women changing the world around them as they graduate and move forward in their chosen field.
