No Room for Mistakes: Dangerous Motorcycle Mishaps And How to Avoid Them
Motorcycles are a popular choice of transportation here in Central Florida. Our year-round warm climate, flat roadways, and plentiful sunshine make for perfect driving conditions for those who enjoy being on two wheels instead of on four. However, motorcycles come with their own set of risks and dangers as well, and a few common mistakes have cost motorcyclists their lives on more than one occasion. So, what are the most common mishaps made on bikes, and how can you avoid them and protect yourself?
Mistake 1: Assuming Other Drivers See You
When on a bike, it’s always best to assume that other motorists on the road don’t see you, and therefore you need to use extra caution and make efforts (above and beyond the norm) to be seen. This includes keeping lights and signals in good condition and USE them liberally, being sure to allow extra time at stops to look twice in every direction, and being sure to use hand signals if weather and/or time of day make it difficult for people to see your lights.
Mistake 2: Miscalculating Your Distance
Bikes have very different stopping distances from larger cars, and they offer less protection than bigger vehicles. If you fail to calculate your following distance properly, and can’t stop in time when a car in front of you suddenly puts on the brakes, you could end up injured or killed. This costly error can be avoided by allowing plenty of space between you and other vehicles when you’re on your bike, and staying alert to brake lights and traffic patterns around you.
Mistake 3: Misunderstanding Rules of the Road
While bikers and motorcyclists have less protection than those in full-sized vehicles, that does not mean they automatically have the right of way. Those on bikes are accountable to the same laws and traffic rules that others on the road are expected to follow, including right of way manners at stop sights and intersections. When on a bike, never assume that you have right of way in any situation. Think twice, and save your life.
If you or someone you love has been hurt or injured because of the costly mistake made by someone on a bike, or if YOU have been injured while on your motorcycle by a driver who failed to look twice, you could be eligible for compensation to help with your ongoing needs and suffering.
