COVID on The Road: How to Protect Yourself After an Accident
Car accidents are inevitable here on Florida’s major roads and highways, so it’s no surprise that motorists are concerned about what a crash might look like with the added complication of COVID-19. Social distancing and sanitization consume our minds, masks adorn our faces, and we’re listening to a constant stream of media updating us on statistics and sickness rates. It’s no wonder that there are more distracted drivers than ever, and because of that, accidents are still happening.
If you are one of the unfortunate drivers who finds yourself in this position, here are a few tips to keep you safe following your collision:
- Wear your mask. Whether your personally advocate the wearing of a mask or not, having one in your car and ready for emergencies is important as many places (including hospitals) require you to have one. Slip it on each time you get out of the car.
- Keep your hands to yourself! Literally. Shaking hands is still a negative and even though propriety would say otherwise, you should NOT shake hands with anyone else at the scene. Keep your hands in your pockets or at your side if possible. Touch as few surfaces as necessary.
- Keep hand sanitizer on your person. Instead of keeping a bottle only in the car, having a small bottle in your pocket, or a few packets of single-serve sanitizer is important when signing documents, touching lots of outside surfaces, etc. Wash your hands thoroughly and often.
- Bring your own pen. While BYOP might seem like a bit much, you’d be surprised how many germs can hang out on commonly used surfaces like ink pens and television remotes. By keeping your own pen in your pocket, you are minimizing your risk.
